What to Cook With Canned Tuna and Pasta

By SupperScout Editorial Team · Updated October 7, 2026

Canned tuna pasta divides people — until they try the good version. This isn't sad desk-lunch tuna; it's a Mediterranean pantry dinner that comes together in 15 minutes. The trick is treating the tuna like an ingredient, not an afterthought.

The base that makes it work

The foundation is olive oil, garlic, lemon, and chili flakes. Warm the garlic gently in the oil, add the tuna at the end so it stays in chunks, and finish with lemon zest and juice. Tuna packed in oil tastes richer; tuna in water works if you add your own good olive oil. Either way, save a cup of pasta water — it turns oil and lemon into an actual sauce.

Three directions

  • Lemon-garlic → the base above + parsley + parmesan. 15 minutes, bright and clean.
  • Puttanesca-ish → add capers, olives, and canned tomatoes to the base. Briny, bold, pantry-only.
  • Creamy → stir a spoonful of cream cheese or butter into the hot pasta with pasta water until glossy, then fold in the tuna.

Common mistakes

  • Cooking the tuna — it's already cooked. Add it last and just warm it through, or it goes dry and chalky.
  • Too much tuna — one can per two servings is plenty. This is pasta with tuna, not tuna with pasta.
  • Skipping the pasta water — without it, you have oily noodles instead of a sauce.

Frequently asked questions

Tuna in oil or water?

Oil-packed tastes better and richer. If you only have water-packed, drain it and add an extra glug of olive oil to the pan.

Does tuna pasta need cheese?

Parmesan helps the lemon version; skip it in the tomato one. There are no rules here — taste and decide.

How long do leftovers keep?

Two days refrigerated in a covered container. The lemon version is best fresh; the tomato version reheats fine.
