What to Cook With Chicken and Potatoes
By SupperScout Editorial Team · Updated October 7, 2026
Chicken and potatoes is the weeknight workhorse — cheap, filling, and nearly impossible to mess up if the timing is right. The whole game is matching the method to your chicken cut, because potatoes and chicken rarely finish together on their own.
Match the method to the cut
- Thighs → the sheet-pan heroes. Bone-in or boneless, they roast alongside potatoes at 425°F for 30–35 minutes without drying.
- Breasts → cook fast and dry fast. Sear sliced breast in a skillet while par-cooked potatoes crisp alongside — or pound them even first.
- Drumsticks or bone-in pieces → braise-friendly. Brown, then simmer with potatoes in broth until everything surrenders.
The timing trick
Potatoes need 25–30 minutes; chicken breast needs 12. The fix: give the potatoes a head start — microwave them 5 minutes before they hit the pan, or cut them smaller than you think (½-inch). Cut potatoes tiny and the whole dish finishes together.
Flavor directions
- Lemon-herb → lemon juice, oregano, garlic. Bright and classic.
- Paprika-garlic → smoked paprika, garlic powder, olive oil. Smoky and weeknight-friendly.
- Soy-honey glaze → brushed on in the last 10 minutes. Sweet-savory and kid-approved.
