What to Cook With Frozen Vegetables for Dinner
By SupperScout Editorial Team · Updated October 7, 2026
Frozen vegetables aren't a compromise — they're often fresher than the sad produce in your drawer, frozen at peak ripeness. The only rule: cook from frozen. Thawing is what makes them soggy.
The no-thaw rule
Frozen vegetables go straight from freezer to heat. Thawing releases water and turns everything mushy before cooking even starts. High heat, no lid, no crowding — treat them like fresh vegetables that happen to be very cold.
Four formats
- Stir-fry → hottest pan, a little oil, frozen stir-fry blend straight in. Don't touch for 2 minutes so they char, not steam.
- Fried rice → peas, carrots, corn tossed in with day-old rice. They thaw in the pan's heat.
- Pasta → broccoli florets or peas tossed into the pasta pot for the last 3 minutes, then drained with everything.
- Soup → straight into simmering broth. Ten minutes and they're perfect.
Which blends work
Stir-fry blends, peas, corn, broccoli florets, edamame — all excellent. Be warier of cauliflower-heavy blends in a stir-fry; cauliflower releases a lot of water and steams its neighbors. For soup and pasta, anything goes.
