Gluten-Free Cooking From What's On Hand
By SupperScout Editorial Team · Updated October 5, 2026
The easiest gluten-free cooking doesn't use specialty products at all — it uses ingredients that never had gluten: rice, potatoes, corn, beans, eggs, meat, fish, vegetables, and fruit.
The naturally gluten-free plate
- Rice-based: fried rice, rice bowls, curries over rice, beans and rice.
- Potato-based: hashes, roasted potatoes with protein, potato soups.
- Corn-based: tacos on corn tortillas, polenta with toppings.
- Just the protein + veg: roast chicken and vegetables needs no starch at all.
Where gluten hides in a normal kitchen
- Soy sauce contains wheat — use tamari if you have it.
- Broths and soups often use wheat as thickener. Check the label.
- Seasoning blends sometimes contain wheat flour as filler.
- Fried foods — the coating is usually wheat flour; the fryer oil may be shared.
- Oats are often cross-contaminated unless labeled gluten-free.
Pasta night, gluten-free
If you keep gluten-free pasta, treat it gently: it overcooks fast and benefits from the same pasta-water technique as regular pasta. If you don't, rice noodles or just rice fill the same role in most weeknight dishes.
